LIU Chi Hsiang
LIU Chi Hsiang (1910-1998) was born in Tainan, Taiwan. In 1923, LIU went to Japan for art study and enrolled in the Department of Western Paintings at Bunka Gakuin in 1928. In the 1930s, he traveled to Paris to study fine arts and was one of the early Taiwanese painters to study painting in France, alongside YANG San Lang and YEN Shui Long. LIU’s work “The Girl in Red” was selected for the Salon in 1933. Later, he returned to Taiwan in 1935, and his work “Seated Woman” was selected for the Taiwan Art Exhibition (Tâi-tián). In 1937, LIU lived in Japan, where he held solo exhibitions in Tokyo. His works “Nora” and “Harvest” received the “Nika Art” awards that were highly valued in the Japanese art world. After World War II, he returned to Taiwan to settle down and participated in organizing art groups to promote Taiwanese art. LIU’s house in Taiwan was set up as The Liu Chi-Hsiang Art Gallery and Memorial Hall in 2018. LIU’s works were mostly based on everyday life, and the unrestrained brushstrokes and the bright colors created harmony and elegant style in his paintings.
