伍步雲WU Bu Yun (1905-2001)出生廣東臺山，年輕時期家境清苦，在故鄉接受教育後，在一次偶然機會自友人處見到油畫而產生興趣，因此決定修習藝術。又因父親為菲律賓華僑，所以赴菲律賓藝術大學深造，在校期間受到素描、水彩、油畫技法劄實的磨練，返回香港時，即全心投入油畫創作，成為專業畫家。1966年開始便到黃山、杭州、西湖等地進行寫生旅行。伍步雲自30年代起創作至今，已累積超過四百多幅作品。但早期作品在一次由廣東中山開往香港的沈船事件遭到全毀。而其創作力的巔峰可謂是60至70年代作品。在60年代他至大陸各地旅行寫生，那些壯麗的河山，純樸的風景如紹興、廣東、成為創傷的泉源。在多次的寫生經驗中，他領悟中國大山大水之美。此期他除了油畫之外，還兼畫國畫，逐漸地他喜歡用西畫方式，表現中國水墨畫的意境與內涵。畫法上他的筆觸粗獷跳動，準確地將山村、遠山、浮雲勾勒出來，筆端透露歡愉的氣氛。用色上雖保持藍及墨的主色，但溫暖的色調點綴其中，色彩層次增加而豐富。
